Special section of Opuscula 19, 2026:

Swedish Institute of Classical Studies in Rome Centenary 1926–2026

In connection with the centenary of the Swedish Institute of Classical Studies in Rome in 2026, the Institute and the Editorial Committee of the Swedish Institutes at Athens and Rome (ECSI) announce an open call for contributions to a special anniversary section of Opuscula 19 (2026) celebrating a hundred years of Swedish research in Italy.

Proposals are welcome from all areas of study including Pre-Roman Archaeology, Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, Art History, Architecture and Conservation, Philology and Language Studies, Classical Reception, History of Archaeology etc. Potential topics may include, but are not limited to:

— Institutional history. Aspects of the Institute and its activities in Italy 1926–2026

— Disciplinary history. Research traditions, trends and tendencies within Classical Archaeology and Ancient History (Antikens kultur och samhällsliv), Art History, Philology, Architecture and Conservation at the Institute.

— Personal histories. Scientific staff, members and affiliated researchers active at the Institute or in Italy, and their scholarly contribution (excluding still active scholars)

— Swedish field- and other research projects in Italy, including Nordic and international collaborative projects

— Italo-Swedish collaboration and exchange 1926–2026

— Current Swedish research in Italy, or on relevant topics, hosted by or within the Institute’s fields of interest

Submission instructions. Contributions should be in English, max 50 000 characters and 10 illustrations. Proposals should include a preliminary title, a descriptive abstract of no more than 3 000 characters including spaces, the author’s name, affiliation and contact details, plus a short biographical statement. They should be sent as one file to hansson[a]isvroma.org no later than 31 July 2024. Accepted articles will be due by 1 November 2025 and will be subject to the normal double blind peer review process of ECSI.

NB The special section will not affect normal article submissions for Opuscula 19 (2026), which are welcome and accepted as usual.
